The Humility of a Servant

The humility of a servant.

James 1:21
Therefore, get rid of all moral filth and the evil that is so prevalent and humbly accept the word planted in you, which can save you. (NIV)

Humility is rare. We think of humility as not puffing oneself up and this is true, but it runs deeper. We get our best example from Christ Himself who humbled Himself to the lowest place and that place was as a servant. Humility is not the opposite of arrogance, but acceptance of our call as a servant of God.

As servants of the Most High God, His command is all that matters. When we elevate our desires above His command, arrogance is the culprit. These desires need not be a sin as unethical or immoral. These desires may have good intentions, but unless we posture ourselves as servants, we are considering our wisdom, our will, and our desire to be greater than God.

Imagine if Jesus would have decided to continue being the greatest teacher leading thousands to believe in God instead of submitting to the Father’s will on the cross? We might say this would be a noble endeavor and certainly not prideful at all. But there would never have been a sacrifice for our sin. No matter how wonderful His messages were, none would be able to come to God because of their sin. Had Jesus chosen His own path, His pride would have denied the world of salvation. What is God calling you to do? Are you elevating your path in life above His path for you?

This humility opens our hearts to the Word of God. Because sin remains in us and we continue to sin, pride also remains. However, as we discipline ourselves by the Spirit to serve God rather than our own agenda, we receive more deeply the Word of God.

Arrogance does not keep us from reading, memorizing, meditating upon, or even teaching the Word of God. But the Scripture is not merely ink and canvass. It is the breath of God. The breath that called into existence all of creation including our own soul rests in the breath of God.

As the Scripture breathes the power of God into us, we receive the supernatural anointing for refinement to receive power to accomplish what He has purposed in us. This anointing releases discernment from Heaven to know the spirits. Power from Heaven to live into our potential being more and accomplishing more than we ever thought possible.

Prayer: Lord, help me to lay aside my agenda daily and serve You. Amen.
